Tacoma, Washington: An up-and-coming meeting destination
Just over 35 miles south of the well-known Pacific Northwest city of Seattle, there is a smaller, lesser-known town that is showing huge promise in the world of meeting planning. Tacoma, Washington has had its rough times and has a historic reputation of being home to hardworking, blue color folks and having a bit of a gritty side – complete with lumber and paper mills lining its shores. But, the state of Washington’s second largest city has been undergoing a renaissance over the past several years and is developing into a solid choice for meeting planners, particularly for those planning small- to mid-sized events.
Generally less expensive and less crowded than its well-known neighbor to the north, Tacoma now offers upscale dining and accommodations, a well-established arts community and the perfectly situated Greater Tacoma Convention & Trade Center.
Tacoma is served by nearby Sea-Tac Airport, as well as Amtrak rail transportation and bus service. There is a new, well-established Tacoma Link public transportation system, and many downtown attractions are within walking distance of the two most popular hotels for those attending meetings or events at the convention center: the Hotel Murano and the Courtyard by Marriott Tacoma. For those looking for a less conventional venue than a convention center, there are also meeting and event spaces available at the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium and the Museum of Glass.
