Planning A Meeting: Should Large People Pay More On Airplanes?
Lately, there has been lots of talk in the news about charging large-size people more money on airplanes for their seats. The heated comments on the Internet are all over the scale as upset people are discussing their opinions about this subject on the chat boards. Is this something that the meeting planning industry needs to worry about? Probably.
From a business point-of-view, it makes total sense to charge by weight for deliveries. The idea just becomes strange when we ask people to take on the role of packages. None of us ever dreamed that airports would consider security systems that would examine us under our clothing; this pay by weight method of flying may become a reality.
In the meeting planning industry, we are used to planning our meetings and conferences around set prices and package deals for airline tickets. If this new concept of paying by the pound for flights goes into effect unexpectedly someday, this might become a Class ‘A’ problem for our industry fast if we are suddenly expected to know what our clients weigh and how to budget their transportation funds accordingly.
With our rapidly changing airline industry, we can never count on past services being held-over into the future. While this pay-by-pound is not a situation today, one more increase in fuel prices could very well make it our grim reality tomorrow. What are your thoughts on this subject?
